Blended Learning: Lifeguard Instructor Recertification: April 12th

Course Purpose

The purpose of the American Red Cross r. 24 Lifeguarding Instructor Recertification course is to give instructors the opportunity to review the course knowledge and skills within a formal course setting to maintain their American Red Cross Lifeguarding Instructor certification.

Successfully completing this course is the only method for maintaining certification as an American Red Cross Lifeguarding instructor.

 

Course Prerequisites

◼ Possess a current, or expired by no more than 1-year, American Red Cross Lifeguarding Instructor certification.

◼ Successfully complete the online session of the Lifeguarding Instructor Recertification course prior to the in-person session.

 

Successful Completion

To successfully complete the Lifeguarding Instructor Recertification course, the candidate must successfully:

◼ Complete the basic-level Lifeguarding Blended Learning course online session.

◼ Complete the Lifeguarding Instructor Recertification course online session.

◼ Attend the entire course and participate in the in-person session.

◼ Complete the skill practice and polish session, demonstrating skills to the standard.

o Entries and approaches

o Active rescues at the surface

o Passive rescues at the surface

o Passive submerged rescues in shallow, moderate-depth and deep water

o Feet-first and head-first surface dives in deep water

o Rapid extrication using a backboard

o Putting on gloves with wet hands

o Two-rescuer CPR with AED for an adult

o Surveillance and rotation procedures

o Spinal motion restriction and extrication in shallow water

o Multiple-Rescuer Team Response Scenarios

◼ Conduct one teaching assignment as part of the skill practice and polish session.

◼ Pass the Lifeguarding Instructor Recertification Course written exam with a minimum score of 80 percent.

Certification

Candidates who successfully complete the Lifeguarding Instructor Recertification course will be issued the following American Red Cross certificate: Lifeguarding Instructor, valid for 2 years.

Lifeguard Training Students must be 15 years old by the last day of the class.

This is a BLENDED LEARNING CLASS which requires a six hour online session to completed before the start of the in-person session.  The link to take the online course & the lifeguard manual will be in your receipt after registration.

Swim Test: We will do this the first day of class.  If students cannot complete the swim test, they cannot continue on.

Swim 150 yards consistently, tread water for 2 minutes without using arms, and swim 50 yards.

Swim 20 yards, submerge 7-10 feet, retrieve a 10-pound brick, swim to the starting point holding the brick (on your back), and climb out of the pool. 1 min 40 sec

 In addition, after the course, participants must complete three final skills assessments:

Rotate in-conduct surveillance – rotate out

Timed Single-rescuer CPR Scenario

Multiple Rescuer Response Scenario

Participants must take one final written exam consisting of 50 questions and score at least 80%.

 Upon successful completion of the Lifeguarding certification course, participants will be awarded a certification that reflects the specific Lifeguarding course they completed. For instance, those who complete the Lifeguarding (including Deep Water) with CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and First Aid, will receive a certification that is valid for 2 years.

Lifeguard Recertification - Watertown - April 25th

To participate in the Lifeguarding Recertification class you must have a current American Red Cross Lifeguarding certification, and certification expired by no more than 30 days.  

You cannot expire before March 26th, 2026 and take this recertification.

The Lifeguarding Recertification course is designed to refresh your knowledge and skills. Upon successful completion, you will renew your certification for another two years. 

During the course, individuals will have the opportunity to review and practice their skills. Participants must pass the update swim test, final written test and the three (3) final skill assessments.

Swim Test

Swim 150 yards consistently, tread water for 2 minutes without using arms, and swim 50 yards.
